Research question
How does the atomic structure of a copper current collector determine whether lithium grows laterally or forms dendrites?
Key result
A very low surface-migration barrier on single-crystal Cu(111) promoted lateral lithium growth. Cells paired with high-loading NCM811 cathodes retained 80% capacity for 120 cycles, compared with 29 cycles using polycrystalline copper.
Research contribution
Dong Yeon Kim, Sang-Wook Park and Dong-Hwa Seo performed DFT and molecular-dynamics simulations. Their calculations connected copper surface structure with lithium motion and the experimentally observed growth behavior.
