Next generation cathodes for Li-ion batteries

Nearly all-active-material cathodes free of nickel and cobalt for Li-ion batteries

Energy & Environmental Science, 17, 3753 (2024)

Research question

How can nickel- and cobalt-free DRX cathodes retain high energy density when inactive carbon and binder are included in the electrode?

Key result

Carbon nanotubes and binder engineering improved electrical connectivity and mechanical integrity. Electrodes containing up to 96 wt% active material exceeded 1050 Wh kg⁻¹ on a cathode-composite mass basis.

Research contribution

Eunryeol Lee performed experiments and calculations, while Dae-Hyung Lee contributed experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. Dong-Hwa Seo co-planned and co-supervised the research with Jinhyuk Lee.
